Kununurra - the first time

We left Home Valley and headed to Kununurra via the famous Pentacost River crossing.  Depending on the weather and time of year, this river crossing ranges from impassable to pretty easy.  It is a tidal river too so the time of day that you cross will dictate the water level.
We arrived at almost low tide after a long period without rain and getting across was so easy it was a bit anticlimactic.   We had video cameras at the ready, including our friend Ross at the controls of his drone, filming from above.  The water never got above the top of the wheels and although the river bed is rocky, it has nothing on the 4WD track at Mt Elizabeth.  Here we are...

In we go..

Who knew Kununurra is so popular?

We had found a lookout near Home Valley that had phone reception and called ahead to book a cabin for 2 nights at the caravan park Ross and Barb were planning to stay at.  Luckily, we got the last one they had.  When we arrived the following day, Ross and Barb found that there were no caravan sites, (powered or unpowered) available.  The receptionist also said that she thought there were none anywhere in Kununurra as it was really busy.  They eventually found one at a different park but it was a bit out of the way and they were lucky to get it.  It was school holidays in WA and NT as well as the week prior to the Kununurra Agricultural Show so the place was packed.

There's not much to report from this visit to Kununurra other than seeing a brawl between 2 girls in a nearby carpark while we ate great fish and chips one night.  We were all just cleaning, shopping and repacking before heading back onto the Gibb to go to El Questro.
Daniel had a sleepover in our cabin one night and then Ben spent the next might having a sleepover in Daniel's caravan.  They have a great time together, making up stories, playing iPad games, Hot Wheels and making short movies.
We will be coming back through Kununurra on our way to Darwin once we have picked up the caravan from Derby.  We will see some of the local sights then and hopefully it will be less crowded once school holidays are over.
